Pop couple Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson are planning to perform at a concert benefiting Hurricane Katrina victims.

Katrina, the biggest natural disaster in US history, left a trail of death and destruction across America's Gulf Coast when it struck last month, and the singers, who have already made financial contributions, hope to help with a benefit show.

Lachey says, "(We're taking part in a) benefit event that's going to happen in Las Vegas in mid-October. We're trying to put that together right now."

Simpson adds, "I spent a lot of times in New Orleans because I shot The Dukes of Hazzard in Baton Rouge. We made a lot of friends (there). I immediately was texting and calling and shooting out emails to make sure people were okay."

Lachey Leaps On Frog Deal

Variety

By MICHAEL SCHNEIDER

Former "Newlywed" Nick Lachey is going solo, signing a development deal with the WB. Lachey, the onetime 98 Degrees band member best known as Jessica Simpson's better half, is no stranger to the Frog, having guested on "Charmed" last season. Under the new deal, the WB will look to develop a new project to revolve around him. Brillstein-Grey TV is also aboard to produce the project, which could either take on an hourlong or half-hour form. No other studio is yet attached. Lachey's past credits include the ABC pilot "Hot Mom," as well as a guest shot on the Alphabet net's "Hope & Faith." On "Charmed" he starred for six episodes as Leslie St. Claire, a love interest for Alyssa Milano's character. As a thesp, Lachey also guested on "I'm With Her" and "American Dreams" (as Tom Jones). Together with Simpson, Lachey headlined several ABC specials, including "Nick & Jessica's Tour of Duty," "The Nick and Jessica Variety Hour" and "Nick & Jessica's Family Christmas." The couple became superstars thanks to their MTV series "Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica." On the feature side, Lachey had a cameo in the recent release "Bewitched." He will also appear in indie film "The Hard Easy."

ESPN Sold Out Hiring Lachey

Mike Beas: ESPN sold out by hiring Lachey

Week 1 of the 2005 college football season hit us between the eyes with some startling developments. Among them were that:

n Traditional powers Oklahoma and Florida State presently reside 2,000 feet below ‘C’ level when it comes to the quarterback position, which is going to make it extremely difficult for either to contend for a conference championship much less a national title.

n Nebraska fans would be wise to bask in yesterday’s glory because, frankly, today isn’t a good day. Division 1-AA Maine, an opponent the old Huskers would have laid 50 points on by halftime, entered Memorial Stadium unafraid in what eventually amounted to a less-than-convincing 25-7 Nebraska victory.

n Either first-year Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis is the offensive Albert Einstein people make him out to be or Pitt’s Dave Wanstedt is the headset-wearing bozo he’s made out to be.

n No one is laying a hand on Southern Cal if Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush remain healthy.

Interesting story lines all. None, however, nearly deposited me from couch to floor the way ESPN’s incredibly popular College Gameday show did when I saw the network added — hang on to your helmets, people — Nick Lachey as a show contributor.

Yep. Seated with, left to right, Saturday staples Chris Fowler, Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit and coming to a college campus near you is none other than Lachey, the popular 31-year-old singer whose extensive sports broadcasting experience includes ... um ... well ... let me get back to you.

Now I have to give credit where it’s due. Lachey didn’t drag last Saturday’s show down. He seemed calm, poised and knowledgeable during his Gameday debut, but, remember, this is a guy who long ago grew used to bright lights as the husband of one of America’s most-famous women (singer/actress Jessica Simpson).

Nevertheless, I have to throw a penalty flag on ESPN. Fifteen yards for intentionally selling out.

College Gameday is — was? — an incredible product that left alone grew larger and more popular with each passing football season. The mixture of the composed Fowler-Herbstreit duo with Corso’s shoot-from-the-hip unpredictability is — was? — pure television magic.

Having the Gameday crew on your college campus is what the Goodyear Blimp used to be, a most telling indicator that your program has arrived.

And now ESPN has sweetened the product with eye candy.

Funny thing is, it will probably work. ESPN hits a home run with nearly every at-bat (Brian Dennehy as Bob Knight in the movie “Season on the Brink” being one obvious exception), so there is no reason to think Lachey won’t attract more members of sorority row and assorted autograph hounds to the Gameday set.

Be that as it may, there are hundreds if not thousands of broadcasting majors out there more qualified than Lachey to occupy Gameday’s fourth chair, men and women who have busted their rear ends trying to construct a resumé worthy of notice. People who on their finest day will never achieve Lachey’s fame or match his bank account.

ESPN has long been a pioneer in sports broadcasting, but its hiring of Lachey sends the wrong message.

Forget what you heard growing up. Apparently, looks ARE everything.
