Justin Jeffre's campaign event on Fountain Square on Saturday was a lot like his campaign itself - small, full of youthful energy and struggling for attention.

For many, the highlight was the promised reunion of Jeffre's singing group, 98 Degrees. But the independent Cincinnati mayoral candidate kept the crowd occupied with a sort of democratic open-microphone night, featuring music, poetry, political speeches and pleas for donations to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Jeffre pledged to donate 10 percent of his total campaign contributions - $7,865 as of his last campaign finance report - to hurricane relief.

The Fountain Square location was an effort to focus attention on one of the Jeffre campaign's main issues, the square itself. He opposes the $42 million plan to move the fountain, plant trees, fix the underground parking garage and turn over its operation to a private development group.

"We're giving away for 40 years our biggest revenue generator" in the parking system, he said. And he said the plan will cost much more than $42 million after adding the $500,000 the city will pay the developer each year to maintain the square. "The public has not been told the truth about the numbers," he said.

But even while Jeffre performed on stage, most of the attention seemed to be backstage, where dozens of teenage and 20-something women sought the chance to talk to Jeffre's more famous bandmate, North College Hill native Nick Lachey. (He's the husband of Jessica Simpson, the "Dukes of Hazzard" starlet.)

"It's a very important time for Cincinnati," Lachey told the crowd. "Don't take it lightly. This is a big deal - and this guy knows what he's talking about."

Jeffre also opened the stage up to lesser-known City Council candidates like Democrat Wendell P. Young of Avondale and independent Paul McGhee of Avondale.

With a musician politicking, one of the politicians also tried his hand at singing. Young took the stage and belted out in a baritone, "If you want to feel great on November the eighth, vote for Wen-dell Young."

Afterward, the band moved to an Over-the-Rhine nightclub, where they were scheduled to perform a few a cappella songs for a $10-a-person Jeffre for Mayor fund-raiser.

98º will perform at fund-raiser
Written by Leslie
Monday, 29 August 2005 19:00

The members of pop group 98º will reunite Saturday to heat up Purgatory nightclub in Over-the-Rhine and boost former band member Justin Jeffre's campaign for mayor of Cincinnati.

Joining Jeffre will be the boy band's best-known member, Cincinnati native and "Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica" star Nick Lachey; Nick's brother, Drew Lachey; and Jeff Timmons.

Sorry, Jessica Simpson fans: The singer and "Dukes of Hazzard" co-star is expected to be in New York City this weekend working in the studio on her new album, says Andrew VanSickle, Purgatory's art director.

It will be only the second time the pop group has performed together since it last toured four years ago. The last time was on the ABC special 'Nick and Jessica's Family Christmas', which aired in December.

Jeffre says it was his idea to reunite 98º for the fund-raiser.

"All of them are very supportive of my campaign and believe that the city would do much better with me as mayor," he says.

Jeffre says one of the songs the band will perform will be "Invisible Man" because he believes local media have overlooked his campaign.

Admission to the event is a donation of $10 or more to the Justin Jeffre for Mayor campaign. Purgatory is a 21-and-up club.

VanSickle also notes that the club is a stone's throw from the School for Creative and Performing Arts, the alma mater of Jeffre and Nick and Drew Lachey.

"It will be a homecoming of sorts, and we'll be excited," he says.

The party lasts from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Purgatory, 221 E. 12th St. in Over-the-Rhine.
